U2 singer Bono and guitarist The Edge shared an unplugged, acoustic and emotional version of “Sunday Bloody Sunday” to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Bloody Sunday massacre that inspired the classic.

In the four-minute video, the two rock icons are in a recording studio as they sing the song from their War album but with tweaked lyrics.

The new lyrics go, “Here at the murder scene/ The virus of fiction, reality TV/ Why so many mothers cry/ Religion is the enemy of the Holy Spirit guide/ And the battle just begun/ Where is the victory Jesus won?”

“Sunday Bloody Sunday” is the opening track from U2’s 1983 album War. Considered one of the best political protest songs, the lyrics of the songs describe the horror felt by an observer of the Troubles in Northern Ireland, mainly focusing on the 1972 Bloody Sunday incident in Derry.

On January 30, 1972, 13 civilians were shot and killed by members of the British Army’s Parachute Regiment at a march protesting internment without trial in the Northern Ireland town of Derry. A 14th victim later died from injuries sustained during the protest.
