Twisted Sister Awarded $1.2 Mln In ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ Copyright Case

Australian politician Clive Palmer has been ordered to pay 1.5 million Australian dollars to former Twisted Sister frontman Dee Snider for using a soundalike of the band’s 1984 hit song “We’re Not Gonna Take It” for a political campaign.

Australia’s Federal Court on Friday ruled that Palmer, who is also a mining magnate, infringed copyright by using the rhythm and melody from “We’re Not Gonna Take It” in the 2019 federal election campaign ads without permission.

The original lyrics of the heavy metal band’s best-known song were written by Snider, but during the election campaign, Palmer used a version of the song with rewritten lyrics and titled it “Aussies Not Gonna Cop It” for his United Australia Party.

Responding to Justice Anna Katzmann‘s judgment, Snider tweeted, “It’s over baby! We won big.”

“HALLELUJAH!! Just found out that the copyright infringement of ‘We’re Not Gonna Take It’ by ‘politician’ Clive Palmer in Australia has been decided MAJORLY in favor of myself as writer and UMG as publishers! WE’RE NOT GONNA TAKE COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT ANY MORE,” he wrote in another post on Twitter.

The lawsuit against Palmer was filed both by Twisted Sister and their record label Universal Music Publishing Group.
