A trailer for “McCartney 3,2,1,” a six-part Hulu documentary series, shows Paul McCartney and legendary producer Rick Rubin reflecting on some Beatles classics.
“Paul McCartney sits down for a rare, in-depth, one-on-one with legendary producer Rick Rubin to discuss his groundbreaking work with the Beatles, the emblematic ’70s arena rock of Wings, and his 50 years and counting as a solo artist,” the official description reads.
In addition to sharing some behind-the-scenes stories, McCartney and Rubin are also seen playing a bit of unreleased music from the Beatles archive in the two-and-a-half-minute trailer.
The trailer begins with McCartney and Rubin standing over a recording console and admiring Ringo Starr‘s famous drum fills on the Beatles’ chart-topping Abbey Road single “Come Together.”
While discussing “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds” McCartney remarks, “This is why we don’t go into tapes,” referring a bum high note he hit on the song.
Rubin also reads out a note of admiration from John Lennon that McCartney had not heard before.
“Paul is one of the most innovative bass players that ever played bass, and the stuff that’s going on now is ripped off from his Beatle period,” the note says. “He’s a great, great musician.”
“Did I write that?” McCartney deadpans in response. “At the time I was just working with this bloke, John,” McCartney says. “Now I look back and I was working John Lennon.”
“We were writing songs that were memorable because we had to remember them,” he says of the music of the time.
The Zachary Heinzerling-directed “McCartney 3,2,1” docuseries is set to premiere on July 16.
