Lynyrd Skynyrd co-founder Gary Rossington has undergone emergency heart surgery and is now recovering.
This news was broken by Lynyrd Skynyrd frontman Johnny Van Zant during the southern rock band’s concert at the Twin Cities Summer Jam in Shakopee, Minnesota, on July 22.
He explained that Rossington, who was subjected to multiple procedures in recent years following a heart attack, had an emergency stent implanted in his heart.
The band followed up with a statement on its Facebook page the next day.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with Gary Rossington as he recovers from emergency heart surgery. Gary is home resting and recovering with his family at home. He wants everyone to know he is doing good and expects a full recovery,” it reads.
“After this past year, the country being shut down and everything we have all been thru, The Rossington’s encouraged the band to go perform in his absence. Music is a powerful healer! We all felt playing the shows and bringing the music to y’all was a better option than cancelling the performances,” the statement added.
