Late legendary guitarist Eddie Van Halen didn’t treat his famous Frankenstrat guitar with any respect, according to his son Wolfgang Van Halen.

“To Dad, it’s just a little piece of junk that he built himself, but to us it’s the most famous thing in the world,” Wolfgang says.

During an interview with Total Guitar, Wolfgang was asked whether he used any of his late father’s equipment during the recording of his upcoming solo project Mammoth WVH. To which he replied that he used few of them, including the original Frankenstrat on the solo on “Mammoth” and “Feel.”

“You feel the history. It’s kind of terrifying holding it, just because arguably it is the most famous guitar in musical history. It’s definitely quite the thing to hold it,” he said.

“When we were pulling it out of its safe, Dad picked it up and he was just noodling with it for a second,” Wolfgang adds. “He’s like ‘Yeah, feels about the same’ and he tossed it onto the couch. Everyone just gasped when he did that. To Dad, it’s just a little piece of junk that he built himself, but to us it’s the most famous thing in the world.”

Eddie created the Frankenstrat, also known as “Frankie,” by combining body parts of a Fender Stratocaster and a Gibson. Van Halen wanted to combine the sound of a classic Gibson guitar with the physical attributes and tremolo bar functionality of a Fender Stratocaster.

Meanwhile, Wolfgang is set to release his solo album Mammoth WVH on June 11 via EX1 Records/ Explorer1 Music Group. He has already released “Feel,” “You’re to Blame,” “Don’t Back Down,” “Think It Over,” and “Distance” from the album.
