Bob Seger said during a recent interview with music journalist David Fricke on SirusXM that he can’t imagine hitting the road again following the loss of close friend and saxophonist Alto Reed.

Seger, who’s appearance on the show marked the 45th anniversary of his Live Bullet and Night Moves albums, choked up while recalling his final conversation with Reed, who died of colon cancer on December 30, 2020.

“I listened really hard to him,” Seger said, recounting the telephone call. “And he said ‘how grateful I am for my wonderful life.’ … I thought that was so beautiful, and I thought he was so brave. I don’t think I could go out (on tour) without him.”

Reed, who was a regular member of Seger’s Silver Bullet Band, appeared on all seven studio albums released by the group between 1976 and 1995. He also performed on two live LPs during that time period, including the classic 1976 album Live Bullet.

Seger’s last trek was in 2019, when he and the Silver Bullet Band embarked on the Roll Me Away farewell tour.

Seger, seemingly content with his decision to not tour again, admitted, “I’ve had a great life, oh my goodness. I loved what I did. Never worked a day in my life, really. The hard parts were sleeping in hotels, having rotten food.”
