Former Van Halen singer David Lee Roth has announced his plans to retire after his upcoming Las Vegas residency shows.
Roth announced his decision during an interview with the Las Vegas Review-Journal on Friday, October 1.
“I am throwing in the shoes. I’m retiring,” Roth said. “This is the first, and only, official announcement. . You’ve got the news. Share it with the world.”
Roth’s last performances would be his recently announced Las Vegas Residency at Mandalay Bay’s House Of Blues. The five-night residency will kick off with a New Year’s Eve show and include four nights in early January 2022. Tickets are currently on sale.
Roth also added, “I’m not going to explain the statement. The explanation is in the statement. These are my last five shows.”
Roth then said he had just spoken to Alex Van Halen, his friend for 50 years and co-founder of the legendary rock band Van Halen.
“Al and I have been talking, and I can’t speak for him just yet,” Roth said, “but he knows what I am about to say.” The vocalist added, “We speak to each other constantly, two or three times a day. We laugh like pirates.”
During the interview, Roth also talked about his late bandmate Eddie Van Halen, who died from cancer in October 2020.
“I thought I might have been the first, frankly,” Roth said. “I might have thought the Marlboro Man would’ve got me. Hey Ed, objects in the rear-view mirror are probably me. And my doctors, my handlers, compelled me to really address that every time I go on stage, I endanger that future.”
