David Crosby has announced plans to release a new album, For Free, on July 23 via BMG. The folk-rock legend offered a preview of the album with the release of lead single, “River Rise,” featuring Michael McDonald.

For Free, which is set to arrive just a month before his 80th birthday, finds Crosby continuing to tap into the tremendous surge of creativity he’s experienced since the making of his acclaimed 2016 album Lighthouse, according to the official announcement.

In addition to the collaboration with McDonald, the new album also features Donald Fagen of Steely Dan and multi-Grammy Award-winning artist Sarah Jarosz.

The title of the album comes from Crosby’s cover of a Joni Mitchell classic he’s returned to many times over the years.

“Joni’s the greatest living singer/songwriter, and ‘For Free’ is one of her simplest,” noted Crosby, who’s accompanied by Jarosz on the track. “It’s one of my favorite songs because I love what it says about the spirit of music and what compels you to play.”

For Free, which Crosby made with his multi-instrumentalist son James Raymond, is a follow-up to 2018’s Here If You Listen.
