KOOL Cause of the Month: February 2007

For 20 years, KOOL 105 has been your home for Mile High Hits.  You've let us in to your home and your hearts. You've also supported KOOL and many charitable causes, helping people all over Denver, and for that we thank you!  But our work isn't done yet.  This web page is a chance for us to increase public awareness of some of our favorite causes and charities around the metro area.  So if you have a few extra hours or a few extra dollars and are looking to donate to a reputable charity, you can count on KOOL's Cause of the Month to keep you up to date. Thanks for caring, Denver!

Mile High Down Syndrome Association

February and Love go hand in hand thanks to Valentine's Day, but February can be about love and compassion all month long with the KOOL Cause of the Month. KOOL 105 listeners are encouraged to give their time and resources to aid in the community support and independence for those with Down syndrome.  Persons with Down syndrome and their families often face challenges in connecting to resources, maintaining contact with a support community, and staying up to date on medical information -- the very things that aid those with Down syndrome in leading independent lives.

Kool 105 and the Daniels Fund are proud to present February's "KOOL Cause of the Month": Mile High Down Syndrome, an organization dedicated to providing those very resources to the Denver Down syndrome community.

About Mile High Down Syndrome Association

Mile High Down Syndrome Association was started by a small group of parents looking to examine the needs of families, who like themselves, had children with Down syndrome.  Like so many other new and expectant parents in their position, the families who created MHDSA found themselves faced with inaccurate or conflicting information about Down syndrome, little interaction with other parents who faced similar issues, ill-informed medical staff, and few opportunities for their children to live, learn, and grow as members of our communities.

Since those modest beginnings over 25 years ago, MHDSA has grown from meeting the needs of only a handful of parents to providing information, support, and visitation services to hundreds of families per year.  In addition, we have expanded our program offerings to provide services directly to individuals with Down syndrome, as well as equipping the health care professionals who care for them with the most accurate and up-to-date information available.

Mile High Down Syndrome Association's Mission

The mission of Mile High Down Syndrome Association is to assure inclusion and enhance independence of people with Down syndrome.  We will achieve this by providing education, resources and support in partnership with individuals, families, professionals and the community.

Community and Volunteer Involvement

Volunteerism has been an integral part of our organization since its start in 1981.  The importance of these volunteers to our organization and their necessity in helping us to provide our services in the community is no more apparent than with our Parent Visitation and Outreach program.  Volunteers are responsible for the bulk of support that a new or expectant parent of a child with Down syndrome receives.

Volunteers also lead our 14 support groups located through the Denver metro area and beyond, with training, oversight, and support by MHDSA staff.  Like our efforts at matching parents with trained parent volunteers, our support group leaders allow us to serve hundreds of families every year by hosting discussion groups, helping us to disseminate new information about Down syndrome and the programs offered by MHDSA, as well as serving as local experts on Down syndrome.

Want to help out, but don't have experience working with individuals with Down syndrome?  There are a number of opportunities for volunteerism throughout the year, such as during our annual Buddy Walk or our Motorcycle Raffle.  Contact us at 303/797-1699 and we'll help you find the best way for you to lend a hand!

Donate

Mile High Down Syndrome Association is not funded by any governmental agencies and we do not accept dues for our services, making individual and corporate donations all the more vital to our success.  Please consider making an online donation at www.mhdsa.org or call our Development Coordinator, Robb Neumann, at 303-871-5643 to discuss how you can help enhance the inclusion and independence of people with Down syndrome.

KOOL Cause of the Month Partners with the Daniels Fund
KOOL Cause of the Month Partners with the Daniels Fund:

KOOL 105 is proud to partner with the Daniels Fund for Cause of the Month.  Philanthropist Bill Daniels loved America and believed each of us has a duty to offer help and hope to others. He established the Daniels Fund in 1997 to support programs that encourage personal responsibility and achievement.  When Bill died in the year 2000, the bulk of his estate transferred to Daniels Fund, making it the largest foundation in the Rocky Mountain Region.

In the Fund's articles of incorporation, Bill directed the foundation to concentrate its efforts in two primary areas: College Scholarships and Community Support, including programs designed to help the homeless, physically handicapped and elderly individuals, as well as those suffering from substance abuse and mental handicaps.
